Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) is a broad term used to describe the many different ways that captured CO2 can be reused to produce economically valuable products or services. Think of it as carbon recycling.
CCU is different from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) (see week 12) because it does not offer permanent geological storage of carbon dioxide. CCU converts this CO2 into products like plastics, concrete, biofuel, etc.
CCU is a climate solution because it operates with the goal of achieving negative emissions — when we are removing more CO2 from the air than we’re emitting.
